WHAT IS KOMBUCHA?

Kombucha is a fermented tea made from four simple ingredients: Water, Tea (green tea or black tea), Sugar, and a SCOBY (which stands for a Symbiotic Culture Of Bacteria and Yeast). It's overall made by adding strains of all said ingredients, then allowing it to ferment for a week or more. The bacteria and yeast, SCOBY, form a mushroom-like film on the surface of the liquid throughout the process. Hence, this is the reason why kombucha is also known as the "mushroom tea". The SCOBY can then be actually used to ferment new kombucha. Acetic acid is produced throughout the fermentation process and so does several other acidic compounds and some trace levels of alcohol/gases, which results in making the drink carbonated. 

This slightly acidic, fermented drink originated about 2,000 ago, in China. It has been enjoyed by various cultures throughout history as a naturally carbonated, slightly tart, delicious beverage that is low in sugar, caffeine, calories, and rich in probiotics. The fermenting process creates a slightly fizzy drink that is rich with probiotics which means it contains live bacteria and yeasts that benefit your digestive system. The benefits of kombucha mainly come from its strong antioxidants and also provides B vitamins, a few essential minerals, organic acids, glucuronic and D-Saccharic acids. Beside alleviating digestive problems and detoxifying your liver, kombucha has been known to provide many more health benefits.

Some fans of Kombuchan have even claimed that some other health benefits include hair thickening, the restoration of hair color, and reversal of the signs of aging. Others have claimed relief of menopausal symptoms, immune system boosts, and the overall improvement of liver functions.

However, to those who have pre-existing health conditions, as well as pregnant women or those who are breastfeeding, they should consult their doctors first before kombucha consumption.

ABOUT COASTAL CRAFT KOMBUCHA

Born and raised on the South Shore of Long Island, Coastal Craft Kombucha came into being in late 2012.  Like many kombucha enthusiasts, they started brewing the original batches in a dark corner of their house, much to the dislike of their family who was tortured by the late night kitchen antics and couldn't stand the smell of vinegar coming from the room.  Luckily, with a lot of patience and support from that same family and some close friends, they were able to take the "Behind the Bed Booch" from the closet and garage to a more fitting commercial space in Oceanside, NY where they've been manufacturing Downright Delicious kombucha since 2015.

  • BERRY HIBISCUS: Our signature house blend of Black and Green tea, with the addition of Hibiscus flowers and Blueberry for a perfect balance of fruity tartness and mellow sweetness.

  • LEMON EARL GREY: A Citrusy, dry, and refreshing Kombucha with Earl Grey Tea, Green Tea, Juniper Berries, and the bright addition of fresh pressed Lemon juice. Our take on an Arnold Palmer!
